What are spider veins, and what causes them?
Spider veins are a specific type of medical condition called venous insufficiency. They occur when the one-way valves inside the veins that allow blood to flow to the heart and prevent it from flowing backward malfunction. When this happens, blood begins to flow backward, and pool inside of the veins, and the resulting pressure causes the blood vessels to burst. Specific causes of spider veins include:
- Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
- Increased abdominal or facial pressure
- Previous blood clots
- Postmenopausal hormonal replacement
- Use of birth control medication
- Wearing girdles
- Working as a factory worker, hairstylist, nurse, teacher, or any other occupation that requires prolonged periods of standing
Do I have spider veins?
You might have spider veins if you see small clusters of veins, either red, blue, or purple. These clusters of veins have the appearance of a spider’s web, which is why they are called spider veins. They often appear in the legs, face, hands, and chest areas. Doctors generally consider spider veins to be a cosmetic issue, but they can cause some discomfort. If and when spider veins begin to evolve into varicose veins, and the veins start to bulge out of the skin or become painful, the condition is then classified as a medical issue and then requires medical attention.
How are spider veins treated?
There is a variety of different options to choose from for treating spider veins! Some of these options include sclerotherapy, laser therapy, and the use of compression stockings. At Sirene Med Spa and Wellness, Dr. Lakshmi Palakurthi uses laser therapy through the cutting-edge Aerolase Neo laser system to reduce spider veins! This state-of-the-art laser bypasses the epidermis to target specific skin tissues without affecting the outer layer. As such, this strategy virtually eliminates the risk of scarring! The laser light is attracted to the melanin, hemoglobin, and water within your skin. It sends a gentle pulse across the targeted area to heat the defective veins. This heating causes the blood within the vein to clot and eventually dry up. This method of spider vein removal is highly effective! According to a 2016 study, 72% of patients can expect substantial reduction of spider veins after four weeks after the first treatment, while 96% can expect to see great results three months after the second or third treatment. Most often, spider veins disappear completely after one to two treatment sessions.
